Kakishibu is a traditional Japanese dye/paint of deep amber colour, which comes from unripe astringent persimmons, that have been fermented and aged for more than two years. Kakishibu has the unique abilitiy to dye cellulose fibres such as linen and cotton, with out the pre mordanting treatment. Kakishibu has been used by the Japanese to reinforce natural materials such as wood, cloth, washi paper, thread, bamboo and leather to provide the effect of an insect repellent, antisepsis and water resistance. Kakishibu deepens in colour with sun exposure. Kakishibu dates back to the 13th century and was used in many ways including coating farming equiptment, fishing nets, stencil making; as a primer for Japanese lacquer work and in the production process for Japanese sake. Kakishibu is a beautiful alternative to synthetic dyes, is organic, water based and easy to use. An instruction manual will be sent with each order.
